"They were all my friends, and they died."
2009 lost many famous, infamous, and quiet but much lived lives. I'm always sad and inspired this time of year, happy to remember the lives lived and challenged to do more with the time I have left...
Here is a link to the NYTimes "The Lives They Lived" and "The Music They Made" plus just a few of my own additions who I thought should be remembered... so many ways to live a life... and of course we still miss you Bob.

Travis the chimp:1995-2009.
He was one of us, until he wasn't.
"After the fact, there were many who questioned his familial bonds as well as the constant anthropomorphizing of Travis. After all, he was not Marat or Little Lord Fauntleroy or an artist; he was not a child or a son of human parents, an actor or even a perpetrator: he was a chimp..." Small but wonderful group I lead at the Modern in Fort Worth for sketching in the galleries this month. This was the last Sunday and we played exquisite corpse from the collection.

Modern Problems | Jacques Tati Retrospective
The Museum of Modern Art’s retrospective of the French screenwriter, director, and actor Jacques Tati (born Jacques Tatischeff, 1907–1982) features newly struck, gloriously restored 35mm prints of his six feature films—Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Playtime, Mon Oncle, his long-dreamed-of colorized version of Jour de fĂȘte, the revelatory Traffic, and the little-seen Parade—along with three short sketch films. One of cinema’s greatest comedians, Tati was also one of its most radical modernists. His experiments with sound, color, and image, and with language, design and technology, are a fundamental, if often overlooked, bridge between the innovations of Buster Keaton and Max Linder in the silent era, those of his contemporaries Jean-Luc Godard, Marguerite Duras and Robert Bresson, and filmmakers today who owe much to his style and humor, from Roy Andersson to Wes Anderson, Otar Iosselliani to Elia Suleiman, Takeshi Kitano to Sylvan Chomet.

Camilla Engman
Camilla Engman
One of my favorite blogs (camillaengman.blogspot.com), artist Camilla Engman who lives in Sweden has a new book out. The Suitcase Series presents in glorious detail the lives of select artists and designers. The books are image-based, full of artwork, sketchbook pages, beautiful photographs and artifacts from where the artists live and work.
Camilla’s book also includes a mini booklet about Morran, the little Swedish dog with a big imagination, a glassine envelope containing 4 postcards, and a baggage tag/bookmark: all held together with a custom-printed band.

VVerevvolf Grehv in Dallas!
Vverevvolf Grehv (pronounced as Werewolf Grave) is the brainchild of my friend Dapose, guitarist/bassist/keyboardist of The Faint. We met him this summer while he was helping Sean Ward to make THE CAVE at BEMIS. He'll be doing the Texas circuit this week, Austin tonight and Dallas tomorrow. Support your inner metal child and make a point of going to the show.
Vverevvolf Grehv is touring this fall as the opening act for Skinny Puppy on the band's "In Solvent See" tour. If not now then:

Tannaz Farsi: Seattle Opening!
I spent a wonderful summer with Tannaz at Bemis making work, playing ping pong, and having fabulous group dinners. After one such night I left a glittered rose in her mailbox and now there will be the piece that you see above and a room filled with "400 roses, glittered and dying plus one megaphone".
Tannaz is fabulous and I love her work and miss her very much. So go! Give her a hug for me and check out the newest gallery in Seattle while your at it: OHGE Ltd.
